Abiding Shepherds (The Night Shift)

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you;
Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.”
– Luke 2:8-12 KJV

It’s so touching, Lord, seeing Your shepherds just minding their own business, or as You have written in Your word… abiding… in the field… where their business was… keeping watch… over what was given to them to watch… the flock… by night… because even the night shift is just as important in looking over what You have entrusted to us. Our children, our people, our assignments, our tasks, and our many gifts You have entrusted to each of us.

Just as the many emergency workers look over the city to protect the people, whether it be the police officers, the firefighters, the medical personnel in the hospital, the emergency room, the ambulance, the soldiers (whether assigned local or afar), and even the simple professions (as most people thought of the shepherds) like those working convenience stores, the late night restaurants, the snow plows who make it possible for emergency workers to get gas, to get to work, to get home, to keep gas in the vehicles between each run, to keep the workers fed, to provide medicines they made need for a cold or a headache, and the many things we may not think on. It’s the night shift… the shift where most of the world has shut down for the night.

Your shepherds were in their field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And then Your angel appeared. How incredible Your glory must have been to shine all around them. But I could understand how that could seem terrifying to those shepherds in the dark of night to see the sky lit up all around them. How thoughtful and patient of You to comfort their fear first thing. That’s You… to be so attentive and personal.

Thank You for the good news of Your Son, and for including everyone in that good tidings for great joy which was to be to ALL people! Jesus is the greatest joy ever! Thank You for being a God who’s willing to give us signs. How beautiful of a sign was Your Son as He was wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in that manger.

Thank You for allowing us to be reminded of Your loving Son. It adds to the great anticipation of Your Son. How You must have felt. Thank You for sharing Him with us. Congratulations on Your new arrival… then… each year… and when we are finally home with the both of You.

According To Thy Word

“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”
– Luke 1:35-38 KJV

This morning’s whispers from You, Lord, are pretty cool, and so personal. You told Mary that her cousin Elisabeth was pregnant before anyone else did, and before Mary went to see Elisabeth. You told her it was a son before there was such thing as an ultrasound. You told her that Elisabeth was 6 months along in her pregnancy. You reminded her of Elisabeth being of old age and called Barren (not that she was any longer! 🙂 ). You pointed out to Mary these things (and how much more in those words only You and Mary know) in telling her/answering her in how it was possible for her own self to have a child without knowing a man yet.

No wonder she believed the angel that said with God nothing shall be impossible. No wonder she had no doubts in what You could do for her, or through her with being pregnant with the Son of God. No wonder she believed everything according to Thy word. I know we think of Mary as just a humble spirit, but it’s no wonder that she also had excitement in her spirit. It made her no less humble.

May we be obedient in believing that nothing with You shall be impossible. May we humbly accept Your will… the Lord of our lives. May we trust You with what we don’t understand, even when You speak so openly clear with us. Thank You for being willing to speak clearly and patiently with us. Thank You for sending Your Spirit, Your angels, and all things that You know would encourage us to believe.

Thank You for being the wonderful God that You always are! Thank You for sending us Your Son. Thank You for allowing the world to know Him as a tender and precious baby. Thank You for allowing us to celebrate with You… the pregnancy announcement… and the journey of waiting for His arrival… the great anticipation You allow us to experience with You… in allowing us to read Your word. And to join in the celebration of His arrival all these years later… and every joyful year at Christmas.

Congratulations, Lord, on the arrival of Your Son!
He’s so absolutely and magnificently wonderful!
Thank You for allowing me to love Him too! 🙂 ❤
And You! ❤ 🙂

“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.”
– Luke 1:26-29 KJV

This morning, Lord, You have me thinking on the angels… and talking with them. Many times throughout my life You have sent me angels… to lead me, to guide me, to comfort me, to lovingly rebuke me, to assure me, to protect me, and to whisper the many wonderful things about You, Your loving Son, and Your tender Holy Spirit. And many times just to sit and talk with me. Sometimes in tears. Sometimes in delightful smiles.

And then You have highlighted for me this morning in being highly favored of You, and assuring me You are with me. Thank You for being so faithfully personal with me, so loving as always. I love You, Lord! ❤
You have permanent favor with me! ❤ Always!

I love You, Lord ❤
I love You, Jesus! ❤
I love You, Holy Spirit! ❤
